Question:

What are the minimum recommended system requirements to install and run the Marine Software modules?

Solution:

These specifications are basically windows minumum specifications.

Network Client Machine

  • Microsoft Windows® XP or newer (Inclusive of Microsoft Windows® 10/11
  • 8 GHz Pentium processor or higher. 32/64Bit.  Do not use ARM CPU based machines.
  • 256GB HDD (SSD is Best)
  • 8GB RAM
  • At least 10GB of free hard disk space
  • CD ROM drive
  • USB port if using MSKWIN Scanner
  • Screen resolution of 1024 x 768
  • Internet explorer version 11 or newer
  • 32 bit mapi compatible email client or Microsoft Outlook® see FAQ 176 for a list of MAPI email clients
  • The MSDM - Marine Safety & Document Manager product will also require Microsoft Office® 2010 (32bit versions only) or newer (Not the Click-to-Run variants)
  • Wired Ethernet Connection (Wireless is unsuitable)
  • Turn OFF Power Saving on your PC Client Ethernet Card. Wireless Conenctions are not supoprted.

Network File Server

  • Windows Server 2003 or newer (including 2019/2022) / Samba Server (e.g. NAS appliances) / Microsoft Windows® XP or newer if no server available.
  • 1 GHz Pentium processor or higher 32/64bit. Do not use ARM CPU based machines.
  • 8GB RAM
  • At least 10GB of free hard disk space for each software module * Number of vessels – For MSDM allow 2GB per vessel
  • CD ROM drive & USB port
  • Screen resolution of 1024 x 768
  • Internet explorer version 11 or newer
  • If operating the Marine Safety & Document Manager product via a remote Citrix/Terminal Server connection, you will also require Microsoft Office® 2000 or newer to be installed on the server itself - however some functions will rely on minimum of Microsoft Office® 2010 Word, Excel and Outlook (32bit versions only) (2016, 2019 or O365 can also be used but not the Click-To-Run variants)
  • Wired Ethernet Connection (Wireless is unsuitable)
  • Share Caching to be turned off on the network share containing the databases and not being located on a DFS/FRS replicated share.
  • Turn OFF Power Saving from your Windows Server Ethernet Card. Wireles connections are not supported.

Note:-

  1. Install the 32Bit retail version of Microsoft Office and ensure it is listed in "Programs and Features" on the control panel. Click-To-Run versions are not supported. See FAQ 364 for a possible workaround.
  2. Typically, no processes will run on the server as the network server will just be used as a file share containing the software application and data which is shared to network clients on the LAN in the office or the LAN on the Vessel when installed on-board. This is unless you want the server to run certain scheduled tasks. In that case the server/host PC must be windows based.
  3. If the company uses a network server (on the vessel or in the office) then all that is needed is a share on an existing server be made available to all users on the network. Recommend "Everyone - Full Control" as initial Share and File level permissions to ensure access to all users of the database files. The Setup Installation file can create this for you if you run the "Full Server installation" in the server. You can restrict permissins to users/groups later but DO NOT have CREATOR/OWNER in the permissions list.
  4. To manually set up a shared Marsoft Folder and set correct permissions please see FAQ 297
  5. To install the "Full Server Installation" on a Windows Server please ensure DEP is set to "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" while the installation is in progress. You can set this back to your original settings after the installation has finished. Further information on DEP settings can be found here:- FAQ 126
  6. Some AV solutions can cause issues. Please review and exclude file types listed in FAQ 79
  7. NAS/Samba Servers please see FAQ 315 (Turning off caching on a samba server)
